Competition time!

Luke Pearson’s insider guide to drawing birds is up on the Guardian website.

They’re on the hunt to find the best bird artist in Britain. So to encourage the amazing young artistic talents of the country, and out of solidarity with Hilda and her adventures with the birds of Trolberg in Hilda and the Bird Parade; we’re also running a birdy comp.

Send us your very best Luke Pearsonesque bird pictures and if they’re really good, we’ll feature them on this very blog. Our absolute tip-top favourite will win a marvellous Hilda Toy.

So if you’ve always wanted to have a go at drawing birds, now’s your chance to spread your wings and fly!

Please send us your pictures as jpegs to nobrowsubs@gmail.com or post them to:

Nobrow

62 Great Eastern Street

EC2A 3QR

London

(Unfortunately we won’t be able to return any drawings that come by post. We’re really sorry but Bird Mail only goes one way!)

Don’t get in a flap – we’ll accept entries up until the 21st of December and we’ll announce the winner in January.

The competition is open to absolutely everyone but I happen to know the judges lean heavily towards younger artists (as in under 12!)

Hilda and the Midnight giant wins Young People’s Comics Award

A week late, but brimming with pride, we are absolutely thrilled to announce that Luke Pearson has returned from the British Comic Awards, covered in glory. Luke took home the Young People’s Comic Award for the magical Hilda and the Midnight Giant.

The British Comic Awards were created to celebrate the strength of story, creativity and originality in comics published over the past twelve months. The award was judged solely by a group of young people and reflects Luke’s skill at weaving a masterful story, and creating a living, breathing world.

A true triumph, all the sweeter for coming after Hilda and the Midnight Giant’s selection as one of Publishers Weekly’s top children’s fiction books of 2012.

Thank you to everyone who organised the award and to Thought Bubble for hosting the event. And congrats to Luke and all of the other winners at the momentous first British Comic Awards!

New Patrick Hruby Polar Prints

We’ve discovered the antidote to dark winter nights! Mixing natural, colourful warmth with a love of clear lines and sheer angles, Californian artist Patrick Hruby has created a series of vibrantly coloured and intricately illustrated polar creature prints, exclusively for Nobrow.

A nightmare for the indecisive, Patrick’s made prints of Penguins, Seals and Polar Bear (might be easier to just get all three…)

Perfect for a kid’s playroom or a chilly study, these prints are each editions of 100 and each one is hand screen-printed in three overlapping colours. Best of all, they’ve arrived just in time for Christmas.

But make sure you check our Christmas shipping deadlines as they’re coming up pretty fast.

The blend of the natural and the technical in Patrick Hruby’s work reflects his background growing up in a log cabin in the woods, studying maths and physics at university before going on to art school

Since then, he’s developed his own instantly recognisable aesthetic. As well as working for the New York Times Magazine and Todd Oldham, he’s already produced two marvellous prints for Nobrow, The Boat and The Castle.
